WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Another grocery store is closer to coming to Pine Valley.

The Wilmington City Council passed a resolution Tuesday night to rezone the area at 4301 South 17th Street and John D. Berry Drive so developers can build a shopping center.

Planners said it would be more than 91,000 square feet with 36,000 of that going to the grocery store, the fourth in the area. Planners, although, said they still don’t know which grocery store would move in. The other square footage would go to stores and offices.

Councilman Kevin O’Grady said he was concerned the proposed shopping center would create a traffic ‘nightmare’ because it’s on a commuting route. Meanwhile, Mayor Pro Tem Margaret Haynes said she approved of the project because many neighbors were OK with it.

The city’s subdivision review board and council had to approve the rezoning plans for the project to move forward.

There’s no word on when developers hope to build and finish it.
